The Pierre-Mauroy stadium, which was built under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) arrangement in the Nord of France in Villeneuve-d'Ascq, is the first of its kind. The facility, which has a capacity in excess of 50,000, incorporate a sliding roof that can be closed in just 30 minutes. The other remarkable feature is a built-in arena, with the northern half of the pitch designed to lift up and slide over the southern half to reveal a "Showcase" venue for concerts and indoor sporting competitions, complete with terraced seating located below pitch level, providing a total capacity of 29,500 seats. This "nested" design, which is the only one of its kind in Europe, represents an exceptional architectural achievement.
